Rumours go that Yash Raj’s Luv Ka The End has generously borrowed bits from American high-school comedy John Tucker Must Die. It’s not surprising then that the soundtrack, put together by Ram Sampath (who also did the background score for Game), is aimed at a younger audience.
The good thing about the soundtrack is that it has a consistent mood. The corollary is that if you don’t like one song in the compilation, chances are that you won’t like any. Filled from start to finish with peppy rock-inspired ballads and dance numbers, the soundtrack will definitely captivate college-goers. Another thing, Ram Sampath has broken away from the trend of adding pointless remixes to fill space.
This album has all of six songs, and no additional remixes. The title song Luv Ka The End… is wholly representative of the album’s sound. It harks back to the pop-rock tone of the ’80s and sounds like something out of The Bangles’ compendium. If nothing else, it showcases singer Aditi Singh Sharma versatility, who’s otherwise a regular collaborator with Amit Trivedi.
Tonight… is worth a listen. It starts with a catchy acoustic guitar sequence and vocalist Suman Sridhar sings in the same manner as Russian-American indie artiste Regina Spektor. The song frequently breaks into English sections with some parts in ‘Hinglish’ too. You can imagine a lover singing to her paramour in a European setting. Freak Out… is another fast-paced track with lyrics like Facebook update aaj ho... and freak out, school’s out... will only appeal to adolescents. The Mutton Song… is definitely ingenious. It starts out as a mock-qawwali number but quickly progresses into a Punjabi electronica piece that has English musician’s Aphex Twin’s signature on it. The video, with actor Taaha Shah doing an item number in drag attire, will raise eyeballs. Finally, Pakistani actor and musician Ali Zafar who made his acting debut in Tere Bin Laden (2010) sings in the glam rock number F.U.N. Fun Funaa… Zafar does a decent job with the vocals but the same can’t be said about the music.
