Tulsi Kumar: Digital platforms can help track a song’s performance

Singer Tulsi Kumar feels the digital medium has further expanded the reach of music and has opened new avenues for the budding music talent in India.

Singer Tulsi Kumar is quite impressed with the wide reach of digital platforms. She is planning to launch her own YouTube channel soon, as she feels that promoting a song on a digital platform helps everyone associated with it understand how well the song is performing.

“Earlier, only the music label understood how well the song was doing, but today, the singer, the lyricist and the music composers also know if the song is getting enough hits on YouTube. The downloads and views [have] become a benchmark to track a song’s performance,” says Tulsi, who has sung songs such as Tum Jo Aaye Zindagi Mein, Humko Pyar Hua and Saanson Ne.

The trend of old songs being rehashed and getting released is catching up these days. Tulsi, who has sung similar tracks such as Gulaabi Aankhen, Dil Ke Paas and Mere Humsafar, says that she was reluctant to take up such songs initially and also feels making comparisons with the original version is unjust. “I think it will be unfair to compare. Nobody in today’s time can be compared to the legendary singers of the golden days. I have been part of a lot of recreative numbers and I would agree that I was sceptical initially,” adds Tulsi.

While such songs have received a mixed response from the music buffs and the music industry, Tulsi points out, “There is an acceptance and that’s why these recreations are being made. Also, they do well and today’s generation loves it.”
