Two concerts for music lovers this weekend.
The first will sound sweet to those who love the rudraveena. It is our most ancient musical instrument. All other stringed instruments are supposed to have evolved from it. Its serene sound transports the listener to an altogether different world. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of rudraveena players in the country.
Sharada Mushti is one of them. The Delhi based musician often visits concert halls in Europe where this instrument is received with love and respect. On Saturday October 15, Mushti will play at the baithak organised by the Shivaji Park Nagarik Sangh. Amita Pavgi Gokhale, a talented young vocalist will render some compositions of the Gwalior gharana. Gokhale has been influenced by the popular singer Ulhas Kashalkar and trained by the veteran Sharad Sathe.

The other concert will offer a note of happy surprise to those who lament the lack of classical music venues. First Edition Arts and G5A Foundation for Contemporary Arts have collaborated to host a two part baithak to welcome Diwali.
It will feature leading Jaipur Attrauli gharana singer Manjiri Asnare Kelkar, who stormed the city twenty years ago with her rigorous music, which had echoes of the legendary Kesarbai Kerkar. She will perform in the city after a considerable gap. In the post lunch part, the ace sitarist Budhaditya Mukherjee will perform afternoon ragas which are not often heard because most of the concerts are held in the evening. Mukherjee is loved and respected for his mastery of the instrument. It is always a treat to listen to one who has been unfailingly serious about his music and about the standard his performance.
