Who’s got ‘dissed’ now?

Singers often take a dig at their exes by releasing a tell-all track.

Not the one you’re looking for, let me save you from your pain. It’s time for me to let you go so you’re free to love again” —these lyrics from Katie Price’s latest song takes a dig at her ex-husband singer Peter Andre.

The track, Free to Love Again, is reportedly the exact phrase uttered by Pete when his divorce to Katie was finalised.

Such songs are no new phenomenon. In the past, there have been songs targeting competing musicians, exes and record companies. Popularly known as ‘diss’ songs, this trend became increasingly common as a hip hop rivalry phenomenon.

Not a very long time ago, pop star Rihanna, along with Lady Gaga, came up with Silly Boy, a song about a guy who has a good girl and can’t keep her, much in the manner of the relationship between Rihanna and Chris Brown when he allegedly started abusing her.

A heated exchange of ‘diss’ songs took place between singer Mariah Carey and rapper Eminem, who suggested he had gotten close with the diva in his track, Bagpipes From Baghdad.

Michael Jackson’s brother Jermaine Jackson also came up with a hate song for MJ, titled Word to the Badd, when he found out MJ’s album Dangerous was
coming out around the same time as his album.

Popstar Britney Spears had also got dissed when Justin Timberlake released the song Cry Me A River, about Spears’ (his ex-girlfriend) infidelity during their relationship.

The video depicted Timberlake’s revenge upon a Britney lookalike. Hindi songs too, have had their share of ‘diss’ tracks.

A couple of years back, Indian pop singer Mika released a track with the lyrics Ae bhai! Tune pappi kyu li, aimed at Rakhi Sawant, as a follow up to the infamous Mika-Rakhi kissing controversy.
