No matter the controversy and the big bashing that Honey Singh has received for his offensive lyrics, the Punjabi rapper is still on top of Delhi University’s fest playlist. Songs such as High Heels, Angrezi Beat and Main Sharabi are being repeatedly performed and equally cheered by young audiences across the campus during various cultural events.

Before the fest season kicked off, college presidents across the university had collectively decided not to invite Honey Singh as their star performer for their respective fests, thus boycotting him. But this move of theirs has failed, as the students feel differently. “When you criticise a song and then the next minute start humming it without any realisation — that’s the kind of effect Honey’s songs have.

As far as competitions are concerned, besides being catchy, there are no other songs compared to his which draw the attention of the crowd towards the performance,” says Sagarika Kapoor, a member of Mudra, the western dance society of Jesus and Mary College.

Another student feels that the lyrics do not hold much importance in comparison to the singer’s music. “The songs are good to perform on, as they have a strong foot-tapping beat, which adds to their appeal and have a good recall,” says Swati, a member of Hypnotics, Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology’s western dance society.
