The alleged rape and murder of Asiya Jan and her sister-in-law Neelofar on May 29-30 in Shopian had triggered protests and shutdowns in the Valley in 2009.

Chief proctor of the university, Naseer Iqbal, confirmed to HT the incident and said it was the ‘peak academic session’ and the event might have disturbed the academic atmosphere.

However, students said that staff members walked up to the group preparing to start the event and explained that it would not be permitted to take place.

Participating students said that even before they gathered, policemen and proctorial staff were deployed to ‘thwart’ the event.

“But the students, however, managed to speak on the case for 45 minutes irrespective of authorities’ presence,” one of them said.
