GUWAHATI: A student was admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital on Monday after the Gauhati University expelled him for anti-varsity activity following an ‘objectionable Facebook post’ and an RTI application seeking the institute’s financial status.
The university also rusticated two other students for a year each. An order signed by the 68-year-old state university’s secretary Hemanta Nath said law student Milton Handique had been rusticated permanently while two other students –Rezaul Karim pursuing law and Hrittick Saikia pursuing mass communication – were rusticated for a year.
Students said Handique suffered a heart attack after he was served the notice. “He is in the ICU of a private hospital where he was admitted after the university hospital declined to admit him,” a students’ leader said on the condition of anonymity.
A spokesperson of the Narayana Superspeciality Hospital at Amingaon said Handique’s condition was serious.
The student leader said they will protest against the “design to destroy the career of students who exercising their right to know” and added that the students will carry out a demonstration on Tuesday morning.
Nath and other university officials chose to not specify the reasons for the action against the trio.

{{/usCountry}}A senior professor, however, said the they were expelled over repeated incidents of ragging. But university’s students said the rustication was politically motivated since the three had been pressing the university authorities over alleged financial irregularities.
