The Ghaziabad municipal corporation has decided to enlist the help of a private agency for door-to-door collection of daily waste from prime colonies such as Kaushambi, Vaishali, Vasundhara and the Sahibabad industrial area.
“An agency from Delhi has been roped in to collect municipal solid waste and transport it to the designated area for disposal every day. The scheme will be initiated on a trial basis within a month,” municipal commissioner Abdul Samad said.
It is estimated that the four areas generate nearly 150-200 metric tonnes of the total 850 metric tonnes of waste generated by the city every day. Due to the absence of door-to-door waste collection system, as specified under the Municipal Solid Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, the city lost vital points in a recent Smart City survey held in Lucknow.
Officials said the door-to-door collection scheme will be on a public-private partnership model and consumers will have to pay for the collection service. This will also help segregation of bio-degradable and non-degradable items.
“We have one month for the scheme to start. Within this period, we will finalise the modalities of the scheme. Further, the composting plant at Pratap Vihar will also be completed by November-end. This will also help us in disposing of the municipal solid waste in a scientific manner,” city health officer Dr RK Yadav said.

{{/usCountry}}The corporation is developing a composting plant with a capacity to handle nearly 400 metric tonnes of solid waste, which will be converted into manure. The plant is constructed by the Construction & Design Services of the UP Jal Nigam.
Presently, the entire municipal solid waste from Ghaziabad city is dumped, without segregation, at a temporary landfill site in Pratap Vihar. The original site selected for the development of a municipal solid waste management plant at Dundahera (near NH-24) is tied up in litigation.
