Ghaziabad municipality to fix solid waste user charges today

The Ghaziabad municipal corporation will decide on two major proposals - levying user-charges on solid waste collection and encroachment by-laws - in their board meeting scheduled on Thursday.

The GMC has proposed door-to-door collection of solid waste from households and other establishments with levy of per month charges ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000 in different categories of housing, restaurants, malls, marriage halls, schools, educational institutions, clinics, pathology labs and categories of industrial units among others.

The proposal also has provision of levy of penalty amount ranging from Rs 100 per day to Rs 1,000 per day in case citizens are found involved in spilling or dumping of solid waste in open spaces, public places, etc.

The executive committee had also cleared the other proposal of encroachment by-laws on June 22. The by-laws will allow the corporation to levy financial penalty ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 200 in case different categories of vehicles are found parked on public places, roads etc. After opposition from councillors, the executive committee kept two-wheeler and cars out of the ambit of the penal provisions.

“The two proposals are meant to decongest and keep city areas free of solid waste. Both the proposals will be discussed at length before the board. If these get cleared, it will help city as such and will also help corporation get additional revenues,” said Abdul Samad, Municipal Commissioner, GMC.
