The city police has decided to launch a joint patrol with residents for two hours every day to curb street crime in the city, especially residential colonies.

The superintendent of police (rural), Abhishek Yadav, gave his approval to the idea of joint patrolling after a meeting with representatives of residents’ welfare associations in the city.

“Residents know what is going on in their locality. They know places where anti-social elements gather, areas that are vulnerable for women and children, and basic problems such as poorly-lit streets and lack of security gates. The joint patrol will help the police curb street crimes in city. This will also make residents feel safer in their societies,” Abhishek Yadav, superintendent of police (rural), Gautam Budh Nagar, said.

Due to increasing cases of crimes involving foreign nationals, the city police has also decided to launch a door-to-door campaign to verify foreigners staying here.

“The door-to-door campaign will be taken up by the representatives of RWAs. The police will only intervene in those cases where foreign nationals, who are tenants, are not complying with the police verification process. Such people will be called to the nearest police post and asked to submit the documents of their identity — passport, visa and other proofs,” Yadav said.

“Volunteers from each RWA across the city will help the police patrol their locality. It is a good step towards curbing street crime. Cases of bike theft, snatching and burglary are reported frequently in the city. Recently, a number of cases were reported in which foreigners were involved,” Harender Bhati, president of Alpha-1 residents’ welfare association and member of Active Citizen Team (ACT), a civil society group in the city, said.

On Sunday, the police also conducted a door-to-door verification drive at various highrise apartments in the satellite city.

“After completion of the verification drive, we will have data on all foreign nationals residing in the city. However, continuous involvement of the residents is required to make it a success,” Yadav said.
