Guidelines for cow carcass issued

Local inspector will have to execute inquest report in presence of villagers if a cow dies of natural causes

The district administration on Monday framed guidelines on disposing of cow carcasses in the area. District magistrate NP Singh said the administration has framed the guidelines to avoid panic or rumours related of cow slaughter.

Under the new guidelines, in case of a natural death of a cow in the district, the local police inspector must execute a panchnama (an inquest report) in the presence of the village headman and four other villagers. The village headmen will also be required to maintain a record of all cow deaths in their village.

“The new guidelines to dispose of the body of a cow have been framed to dispel cow slaughter rumours in the district. Rumour mongering by notorious elements disturbs the peace of the area,” Singh said.

On Sunday night, an animal carcass was found in Chithera village, just seven kilometres away from Bisada village. Villagers assembled at the spot in Chithera even as rumours of cow slaughter flew thick and fast. But the district administration, with the help of some prominent villagers, controlled the situation.
