Man beaten up in Shaheed Nagar over a tiff, police deploy PCR van

The man was allegedly attacked with sticks and a saw near the house of 65-year-old Singhsan Yadav who was murdered by four men from the same locality on January 25 after a minor altercation.

A 35-year-old man was allegedly attacked by a 22-year-old with sticks and a saw in Shaheed Nagar locality on Thursday evening. The incident has made the police deploy a PCR van in the communally sensitive area to prevent any escalation.

Police said the incident took place near the house of 65-year-old Singhsan Yadav who was murdered by four men from the same locality on January 25 after a minor altercation.

According to the police, Rakesh Kumar was allegedly attacked and beaten up by 22-year-old Shanu. The police have filed a non-cognizable report (NCR) against Shanu and also deployed a PCR van near Rakesh Kumar’s house to prevent further violence.

“The issue started when a wallet of one of my friends’ got lost and was found by Shanu. But, he took out all belongings and tore up the wallet. When we came to know that Shanu had the wallet, we went to him but he threatened to get us beaten up. Then, we went to his family and sought their help in getting Shanu to return at least the documents in the wallet,” Kumar said.

“Some locals also arrived at Shanu’s house and complained about his bad behaviour and foul language. Later, in the evening, while I was standing outside the house of my neighbour, Shanu came there and threatened me with dire consequences. He came with two other persons who beat me up and also attacked me with a saw. He was furious that I had complained about him to his family,” Kumar claimed.

Yadav had allegedly objected to some men using foul language about locals and women. This had led to him being killed by the men who hailed from a different community.They were later arrested.

“Such trifle incidents (like one on Thursday) have resulted in bigger crimes (Yadav’s murder). The police should be more proactive as the area is communally sensitive. Meanwhile, we will approach the National Human Rights’ Commission over this incident since an FIR has not been lodged in the case,” said Rajiv Sharma, a human rights’ activist, who had recently filed a complaint in the Singhsan Yadav’ murder case, alleging police laxity.

“There was an altercation and the victim suffered injuries. He had complained to Shanu’s family and Shanu later beat him up. For the security of the victim, we have deployed a PCR van. So far, we have registered an NCR but we will convert it to an FIR under sections of causing hurt and criminal intimidation. We have taken precautions to ensure the issue doesn’t escalate further,” said Anup Singh, circle officer, Sahibabad.
