Two ‘cow vigilantes’ held for attacking duo transporting cows in Jewar

On Thursday night, two men identified as Jabar Singh, 35, and Bhoop Singh, 45, were attacked in Jewar by a group of eight persons for transporting cows, while on their way home to Sirsa Manjhipur after buying a cow and a calf from Mehndipur village.

A 24-year-old man from Jewar was arrested on Saturday morning for allegedly beating up two persons who were transporting cows. A second accused in the case, Mahesh, 46, was arrested in Jewar on Saturday evening by the police. A manhunt has been launched to nab others.

On Thursday night, two men identified as Jabar Singh, 35, and Bhoop Singh, 45, were attacked in Jewar by a group of eight persons for transporting cows, while on their way home to Sirsa Manjhipur after buying a cow and a calf from Mehndipur village.

Police said that Gourav, a ‘cow vigilante’, was arrested near the Jewar bus stand around 8am on Saturday based on a tip-off when he was trying to flee.

Gourav, a resident of Jewar, has been absconding for two days, as police teams were on the lookout for the persons involved in the incident. The police said that Gourav had reached the bus stand at 6am and was waiting for an Agra-bound bus.

Ajay Kumar Sharma, station house officer of Jewar police station, said, “Gourav was among the four named in the FIR. Three of them are still absconding and three teams police teams have been formed to nab them. Moreover, we are also questioning four others who are suspected to be involved in the incident.”

They were rushed to a private hospital in Jewar, shifted to the district hospital in Noida and discharged on Friday. They told the police that they had bought the cows to start a dairy business.

“The cow was donated to my brother by his friend. The incident took place around 1pm near Devi Mandir in Jewar on Thursday, when my brother and nephew were giving the cow some water to drink. Both are able to speak but their arms are fractured,” said Fateh Raj, brother of Bhoop Singh.

Police have registered the case under sections 147 (punishment for rioting) 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapon), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 307 (attempt to murder) of Indian Penal Code.
