Woman who eloped to get married, found dead at home

The police found her throat slit and the kitchen knife stuck to her throat.

A 22-year-old woman, who eloped and got married to a man from a different caste, was found murdered inside her rented house in Sahibabad area of Ghaziabad on early Monday morning. The police found her throat slit and the kitchen knife stuck to her throat.

The victim was identified as Pooja Bharti who eloped with Sandeep Rai around two months back from their native place in Kushi Nagar near Gorakhpur. Later, the couple got married at a temple and hired one of the six rooms on rent, owned by Joginder Chaudhary in Shyam Park Extension.

“They had come to stay here and I hardly witnessed the woman move out. She did not converse with other tenants and only moved out for shopping when it was necessary. Otherwise, she stayed indoors. I came to know that she was not keeping well for past 10 days. Her husband arrived early morning from his night duty and went to police station after he found her dead,” Chaudhary said.

So far, the police have picked up Rai for questioning and said that the couple belong to different castes and had eloped several times earlier before landing up in Ghaziabad. Rai works at a private unit in Sahibabad.

“Victim’s husband had told that they got married at a temple. We have called up their parents to inquire more about the background and the incident. So far, we have no clarity about the accused but we are probing all angles. Her husband is being questioned in details,” said Akash Tomar, superintendent of police (city).

“We are also getting her post mortem conducted to ascertain the time of death. This will be matched with the time when her husband arrived back home. We are probing all angles in the case,” he added.
