She has won most of the titles, medals and awards the sport has to offer but legendary boxer MC Mary Kom is not satisfied and is as hungry for another medal as she was for her first. (CWG highlights)
While she is in contention at Gold Coast, Mary Kom is already planning for the next event and is likely to give the Asian Games a miss so as to concentrate on winning back the World Championship.
Having made a strong start in her maiden Commonwealth Games, the 35-year-old five-time world champion defeated Sri Lanka’s Anusha Dilrukshi Koddithuwakku on Wednesday. With this win, Mary Kom made it to the final, thus assuring herself at least a silver medal.
In the men’s section, all the eight Indian boxers in the fray reached the semifinals, thus assuring themselves eight medals.
Mary Kom led on the scorecards of all five judges, though the Indian star was not at her best and the score was quite close, with the Indian winning only by couple of points in each rounds. In the final, Mary Kom meets Northern Ireland’s Kristina O’Hara, who had defeated Tasmyn Benny of Australia in the second semifinal.

While Mary Kom reached the final, India suffered setbacks when L Sarita Devi and Pinki Rani lost in the quarterfinals and crashed out. Pinki lost to Lisa Whiteside of England 2-3 in 51kg while Sarita lost to Anja Strideman of Australia in 60kg.
Five Indian boxers had reached the semis on Tuesday and the remaining three joined them in the last-four stage in their respective weight class on Wednesday.

In men’s 52kg, Gaurav Solanki defeated Paupa New Guinea’s Chalres Keama 0-5, while in men’s 75kg, Vikas Krishan outclassed Zambia’s Benny Muziyo by the same margin. In men’s 60kg, Manish Kaushik defeated England’s Calum French 5-0 to reach the semifinals.
