It was not a great start for India at the Paralympics as discus thrower Amit Kumar Saroha finished seventh among as many competitors in the men’s discus throw F52 final on Thursday.
Saroha managed a distance of 9.01 in his fourth attempt after squandering the first three attempts.
He again fouled the fifth before ending with 8.7m in his sixth and final attempt.
Latvia’s overwhelming favourite Aigars Apinis clinched the gold with his best throw of 20.83 ahead of Poland’s Robert Jachimowicz (19.10) and Croatia’s Velimir Sandor (18.24).
Indian powerlifter Farman Basha missed out on a bronze medal as he finished fourth in the men’s 49kg category.
Naresh Kumar Sharma finished a penultimate 21st in the men’s 10 metre Air Rifle Standing SH1 qualification round to crash out of the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
Sharma shot a cumulative 583 in the four series to end his campaign at the Olympic Shooting Range.
In the first series, Sharma shot 98.1 but failed to better it in the second with a shot of 95.6. The 44-year-old came back well in the third series to fire 99.2 and another 103.3 in the fourth series but that was not enough to book a place in the final.
