Chef de mission Tan Sri Abdul Halil, who landed here on Tuesday, said that he was “quite impressed with everything so far.”

Effusive in his praise for the transport, Halil said, “We had expected a long queue at the airport. But our players cleared immigration and all the checks within an hour. And we managed to make it to the Village very quickly.”

Malaysia had sent a seven-member advance team the past week to inspect the conditions at the Games Village. “It was not really ready then. It was not clean and there was rubbish and debris all around,” Halil said. “But now everything looks set and ready.”

The contingent is satisfied with the security measures in place. “While travelling in the buses, there were policemen with live bullets. That was slightly scary, but it is needed to build confidence. The security is above average,” Halil said.

All the players are expected to arrive by October 1, two days before the Games, and the contingent expects to improve and win more medals than its previous haul of 29 in Melbourne 2006.
