Colleges race for space

Preparations for the Commonwealth Games (CWG) have left some North campus colleges within their premises to conduct trials. Most of the seven colleges that have been selected by the CWG Organising Committee have either shifted some of their trials outside their premises or in an instance or two, have decided not to conduct tests at all.

With CWG taking up the main sports field in most cases, for rugby sevens, sports such as cricket, hockey and football, which need a large ground have been relocated in most cases.

“It is a little bit of inconvenience but we don't mind. We have already marked alternate places for trials,” said Kuljeet Kaur, the head of the sports department of the SRCC, the college most affected by the construction.

Barring sports requiring less space like judo, swimming and chess, others at SRCC have been shifted.

Likewise, Khalsa College will hold cricket, hockey and football trials outside whereas lawn tennis, table tennis and basketball will be held within the college premises.

The circumstances have also brought about close coordination among these neighbouring colleges.

For hockey, football and athletics, St Xavier's school, ISBT has been selected.

Daulat Ram College, a women's college, however, might not conduct trials for football and hockey this year.
