Australian Formula One driver Mark Webber suffered multiple fractures to his arms and legs after being hit by a car during a charity multi-sport race.

Australian Formula One driver Mark Webber suffered multiple fractures to his arms and legs on Saturday after being hit by a car during a charity multi-sport race, according to reports.

Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio said on Saturday that Webber, who drives for the Red Bull F1 team, was competing in the challenge event he organises on the east coast of the island state of Tasmania when the accident occurred.

ABC said Webber was competing on the bike leg of the challenge when he was hit by the car. It quoted Tasmanian Ambulance Service officials as saying 32-year-old Webber has multiple fractures in his arms and legs and was being airlifted to a hospital in Hobart in stable condition.

The competitors in the Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge race over five days over 280 kilometers (175 miles) of trekking, mountain biking and kayaking throughout the island state of Tasmania. The challenge, first staged in 2003, is scheduled to end Sunday in Hobart.
