HT Impact: After fire, para-athlete Karamjyoti gets new room
Acting on HT’s report, ‘SAI apathy on view as para-athlete Karamjyoti forced out,’ Karamjyoti, who was told by SAI officials to return home for a week after a faulty air-conditioner damaged the room, was shifted to a room on the ground floor.
Karamjyoti, a paralympic discus and shot put athlete who was asked to vacate her Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium hostel room after it was damaged in a fire on Thursday, has now been shifted to another room.
Acting on HT’s report, ‘SAI apathy on view as para-athlete Karamjyoti forced out,’ Karamjyoti, who was told by SAI officials to return home for a week after a faulty air-conditioner damaged the room, was shifted to a room on the ground floor which was previously occupied by Deepak, a shooter.
“They found me a room so I stayed the night at the hostel,” said Karamjyoti.
Karamjyoti couldn’t be accommodated on the first floor of the hostel because the facility has no lift for wheelchair-bound sportspersons.
The incident again highlights how ill-equipped our stadiums are when it comes to differently-abled athletes.
