India will finally have a swimmer at the Olympics. The international swimming federation, FINA, sprang a surprise by choosing Karnataka's Gagan AP Ulalmath in the 1,500m freestyle. HT Correspondent reports.

India will finally have a swimmer at the Olympics. The international swimming federation, FINA, sprang a surprise by choosing Karnataka's Gagan AP Ulalmath in the 1,500m freestyle.

But the surprise move, which gave Gagan a berth under the ‘Universality' quota, has shut the door on more renowned swimmers, like Virdhawal Khade, Sandeep Sejwal, Aaron d'Souza and Saurabh Sangvekar, who had clocked Olympic Selection Timings.

Swimming Federation of India (SFI) secretary-general Virendra Nanavati clarified that it was the prerogative of the FINA to pick a swimmer from the country, which did not have representation at the Games.
