The Indian men's recurve team lived up to its billing of Commonwealth Games favourites with a heartening performance on the opening day of the World Cup Stage IV archery meet in Shanghai on Wednesday, the last competitive meet before the Delhi Games.
The performance of the women, however, was disappointing.
The trio of Jayanta Talukdar (684 out of a possible 720), Tarundeep Rai (674) and Rahul Banerjee (672) gave India an aggregate of 2030 to finish second behind World and Olympic champions Korea.
In the individual qualification, Talukdar finished second behind Korean Im Dong-Hyun whose 691 bettered the world record of 687 set at the Athens Olympics in 2004.
Korea also bettered the team's world record of 2039 established at Antalya in 2008 with an aggregate of just 2043.
India's first round opponents in the men's elimination round will be 15th-placed Great Britain, a team that is one of the tougher opponents at the Commonwealth Games with Australia, Canada and Malaysia.
The women's performance was poor with the team finishing eighth with 1900 points. They will meet ninth-placed Japan in the opening elimination round.
The Koreans, who are not part of the Commonwealth, topped the qualifications with an aggregate of 1999.
