Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang won the first gold for India at Commonwealth 2010. HT Reporter gives us a low down on the duo's path to glory.
Can you give us a first-hand description of the event?
India got its first gold in 10 metre air rifle pair event which is a team event; England, Scotland and many other nations being the other competitors.
Gagan shot a 598/600 which is two points less than the world record while Bindra shot a 595/600.
The combined aggregate of the duo fetched India its first gold which is possibly a CWG record.
Do we see any other possibility of gold for the nation?
Today all the pair events are being held. 25 m sports pistol for women, 50 m free pistol for men are the events lined up for later in the day among others. India could make a clean sweep of medals because the shooters are really good and in-form.
World Champion Tejaswini Sawant is shooting, paired up with shooter Lajja Goswami. We are hoping for another gold from them.
Can you describe the ambience at the stadium post event?
There was camaraderie all over as it was the first gold for India. National Rifle Federation of India members, coaches and players broke into applause as soon as the duo got gold for us. The duo was congratulated and there was major fanfare around.
Bindra's father was present at the event. Overwhelmed by the performance, he said, "Shooting is alive in my son... Performance of both Gagan and Abhinav has done our country proud."
