Criminals shot dead a jeweller and decamped with cash and ornaments worth Rs 3 lakh in Bihar’s Vaishali district late on Thursday night.
Police said jeweller Arvind Kumar Sah was returning home on his motorcycle after closing his shop when he was shot dead at Patepur, 15 km north of district headquarters Hajipur and 36 km north of state capital Patna.
“Two motorcycle-borne criminals intercepted Sah’s two-wheeler and tried to snatch his bag. When he resisted the loot attempt, the criminals fired at Sah and fled with the bag containing cash and ornaments,” the police quoted eyewitnesses as saying.
Sah was first taken to Patepur primary health centre, which referred him to Patna Medical College Hospital for treatment, the police said, adding the jeweller succumbed to his injuries on way to the state capital.
Police said that Sah’s wife, Nidhi Devi, had registered an FIR, naming Sanjay Singh of Mukundpur village in the district and his associate as accused. In her complaint, Devi claimed that Singh had recently visited her house and threatened her husband.
The body of the victim was handed over to the family after post-mortem examination on Friday, the police added.
This is the fourth incident of attack on businessmen in the district within a week.
Armed criminals had shot at and robbed a fish trader Vinod Kumar Singh of Rs 4 lakh at Hajipur on April 24, triggering protests by residents.
On April 23, jeweller Amit Sah was robbed of cash and ornaments at Belsar, 30 km from Hajipur, when he was heading home after closing his shop.
Earlier on April 21, jeweller Pravin Kumar was shot at and robbed of cash and ornaments in Anjan Pir locality of the town.
