KD Jadhav is the first Indian wrestler to win an Olympic medal, thus bringing India's first Games medal in a sport other than hockey. He is also thus the first individual medallists in the country's independent hosty. Jadhav competed in the bantamweight freestyle category at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and won bronze. (Olympics)

The next wrestling medal then came over half a century later in 2008 with Sushil Kumar winning bronze in men's 66kg freestyle at the Beijing Olympics. Sushil then won the 66kg silver at London 2012, thus becoming the first Indian to win individual medals at consecutive Olympics. (PTI)

Wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt fought back from the brink to clinch a bronze medal at the London Olympics, after narrowly missing out in Beijing four years ago. He thus became the third wrestler after Sushil and Jadhav to win an Olympic medal.

Sakshi Malik became the first Indian woman wrestler to win an Olympic medal at Rio 2016. Sakshi was an underdog in the field and she ended up being the athlete who broke India's medal drought at the Rio Olympics. She beat Mongolia’s Purevdorjin Orkhon, who became world champion the following year, and Asian champion Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan, who became world champion in 2019, to script history.(Getty Images)
