Seema Dilip Sakate, daughter of a labourer from a slum in Vidyanagar, Chinchwad, was apparently unhappy about her impending marriage, according to neighbours.

While the Pimpri police said they were investigating the case, an elderly lady from the neighbourhood said, “We were not close to them but I heard that she did not like the groom.”

Scheduled to marry her fiancée from Karad, Seema was alone at home at the time of her death as she had ‘mehendi’ (Henna) on her hands, police said.

The family was supposed to travel to Raj Vaibhav marriage hall in Kaletek area, Karad in Satara district and the couple was to get married at 3:30 pm on Thursday.

Her younger sister raised an alarm after she found Seema hanging by a piece of clothing at around 9 pm on Tuesday . She was then rushed to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) hospital.

Assistant police inspector (API) DP Suryavanshi of Pimpri police station said Seema’s father was a labourer and had a drinking problem. There were frequent quarrels at home, police said. Seema is survived by two elder and two younger siblings besides her parents.
