Adding to its laurels, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) made a significant achievement by securing the 4th rank at the UK-based Times Higher Education (THE) World Rankings 2017- 2018, in terms of its quality of teaching. The university, like the previous years has secured the position after Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and University of Delhi.
“The strategy that we are following in terms of teaching and forging training programmes has improved over the years and the results are shown in this ranking as we stand 4th amongst all the universities in India and for that I am extremely ecstatic,” said SPPU vice chancellor Nitin Karmalkar.
In terms of its overall performance, the varsity stands at 16th position among various higher education institutes in India, after IISc Bengaluru and a number of IITs.
The varsity won this top position, along with being ranked 7th for ‘imparting skills and learning’, among traditional universities in India, as per the results declared on Wednesday. However, as compared to its performance in the previous years, the ranking has dipped a slightly lower this year. In the past years, the university secured 2nd and 3rd positions nationwide. However, on a global platform, Pune University has continued to maintain its 601-800 global score.
Talking with respect to the university’s position in research, VC Karmalkar added, “Although our overall performance in terms of rankings in the list of traditional state universities has increased compared to last year, this year we are sharing the first position with other state universities like Delhi University, BHU, and Aligarh University. {{/usCountry}}“For now, most scholars at the university are more focused towards publishing their research work, but to get more national and international visibility in terms of research we would have to start patenting our research works.”
In terms of the number of international students
coming to India for higher education and the university’s overall international outlook, Pune University ranks 6th nationwide, leaving behind IITs and IISc.
These 13 indicators are then grouped into five areas which include the learning environment worth 30 per cent of the overall score; volume, income and reputation of research weighing a 30 per cent score, along with another score worth 30 per cent for citations to show research influence. The rest of the score is then measured as per other variables like 2.5 per cent score depending on industry income from innovation.
