Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh, on Monday, said that Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis should have followed the tradition and attended the auspicious Ashadhi Ekadashi puja at the Lord Vitthal temple in Pandharpur.
Digvijay Singh, who has been visiting Pandharpur’s Vitthal temple for the past 27 years, spoke to media after he returned from the pilgrimage. Singh said that if a person has faith in God, he should remain present at the temple for the Ashadhi Ekadashi puja. Singh demanded answers from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on why their representatives remained absent for the auspicious puja and alleged that the BJP is going back on its promises.
According to tradition, the chief minister of Maharashtra, along with lakhs of warkaris, perform the Ashadhi Ekadashi puja every year at Pandharpur’s Lord Vitthal temple, which is in Solapur district.
This year, Maratha outfits had threatened that they will not allow the chief minister to perform the puja as the state government failed to facilitate reservation for the Maratha community. Considering the law and order situation and the graveness of the threat, CM Fadnavis, on Sunday, had announced that he has decided to skip the puja in the interest of the safety of 10 lakh warkaris.
On his decision, Digvijay said, “Devendra Fadnavis had promised the Maratha community that he will facilitate reservation for them within a month. As the BJP failed to fulfil its promise, they are now hiding and not facing the common man, it is only natural that the Maratha community is angry. The Maratha community is unsatisfied with the government, but the CM should have faced the situation and should have remained present for the puja.”
