The city recorded a maximum temperature of 42.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a heatwave warning for Pune and Maharashtra for the next 48 hours. The city recorded a minimum temperature of 25.9 degrees Celsius.
“Pune and north central Maharashtra will see a rise in temperature on April 28 and 29, with scattered heatwave in some parts. South central Maharashtra will experience heatwave in some isolated areas,” said Anupam Kashyapi, head, weather, IMD.
The highest recorded temperature on Saturday was at Akola (46.4 degrees Celsius) while Ahmednagar, Jalgaon, Solapur, Nanded and Beed recorded a temperature between 44.2 and 44.9 degrees Celsius.
There will be scattered heatwave as well as severe heatwave like conditions in some parts of Vidharbha, according to IMD.
“Pune is currently reeling under heatwave conditions with warm nights and it’s minimum temperature has seen a departure from the normal by + 4.5 degrees Celsius or more. There is less moisture in the southern parts of the state and the temperature is very high, so in the afternoons, there a chance of partly cloudy conditions with traces of very light rain in isolated areas over south Maharashtra and even for Pune district after April 29. There is a chance of gusty wind with lightning during afternoon hours in isolated areas of south of Maharashtra and also in Pune in one or two isolated pockets after April 29,” said Kashyapi.
He added, “The heatwave will lessen after April 29, but one or two such strong spells of heatwave are expected during May and because of this, we might experience pre-monsoon showers too.”
