The motor accident claims tribunal (MACT) has directed the Pune mahanagar parivahan mahamandal limited (PMPML) to pay compensation of Rs 2.1 lakh to two daughters of a 58-year-old woman who had died after being knocked down by their transport utility bus.
The deceased, identified as Rehana Munaf Arab, a resident of Yerawada, was crossing the road when she was hit by a PMPML bus. The accident took place around 2 pm on December 14, 2015, at Dhayari phata on Sinhagad road. Arab was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was proclaimed died after being admitted to the Intensive care unit (ICU). Later, an FIR was lodged against the bus driver for rash driving and causing death due to negligence with the Sinhagad road police station.
One of her daughter is married, while the other is a divorcee. The deceased worked as labourer and earned Rs 5,000 per month. Her daughters had filed a compensation claim with the MACT demanding a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs.
However, the PMPML had denied the police version which stated that the woman was found on the road by the bus driver who went to Abhiruchi police chowky and informed about her. Meanwhile, some people had rushed her to the hospital. The police had taken the name and address of the bus driver and conductor and let them go. On December 15, 2015, the driver was called by the police and an FIR was registered against him.

{{/usCountry}}There was no fault of the driver, he did his duty of informing after he saw the woman near the bus stop, PMPML defence counsel stated before the MACT. Advocate Kishore Dete who represented the family in his submission before the court said that the family had to spend Rs 25,000 towards funeral expenses of the deceased and said that the role of driver for rash and negligent driving had clearly emerged during the natural course of investigations carried out by the police.
