The issue that the department is now facing is that there is no takers for these confiscated cylinders. With the PMC imposing a fine of Rs 3,000 for each cylinder, neither the hawkers nor gas companies have approached the administration.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has instructed gas cylinder distributors to ask for no objection certificate (NOC) issued by the civic body from hawkers selling roadside food before providing them with commercial cylinders (19 kg).

Madhav Jagtap, PMC anti-encroachment department head, said that the civic body had started a drive against illegal hawkers who cook food on roadsides, thereby flouting the new hawkers’ policy. The department has seized more than 700 gas cylinders from hawkers under its campaign.

The issue that the department is now facing is that there is no takers for these confiscated cylinders.

With the PMC imposing a fine of Rs 3,000 for each cylinder, neither the hawkers nor gas companies have approached the administration.

Left with no alternative, Jagtap said that the PMC has decided to return the LPG cylinders to the gas companies instructing them to provide cooking gas cylinders to hawkers only after they produce NOC from the PMC.

The civic official said that most of the seized gas cylinders were for domestic purpose. As per law, a criminal case can be filed against the person who are using residential cooking gas cylinder for commercial purpose.

The PMC has also asked the gas dealers to cooperate with the civic administration or face action in future.
