A team of doctors from Poona Hospital on Tuesday successfully performed rare ‘hole-in-the-heart’ cardiac surgery on 44-year-old patient. The patient, originally from Nandurbar, was suffering from Scimitar Syndrome with set of abnormalities such as hole in the heart, blood from right lung, which was smaller in size than normal, not returning to the heart.
After the four-hour-long surgery carried out of team of doctors led by Dr Vijay Natarajan, the patient was reported to be stable and recovering. According to Dr Natarajan, the surgery was challenging because it involved a middle aged adult with the anomalies since birth.
The complicating factors were the large hole in the heart and the increased pressures in the lung.
“Scimitar syndrome is seen in 1 in 100, 000 live births and usually presents and is treated in infancy. What made this rare was the adult presentation and the hole in the heart with the severe pulmonary hypertension. Not many cases have been reported in world literature and fewer still in India,” Dr Natarajan told Hindustan Times.
The doctors had to perform surgery by separating the anomalous vein through the right chest, as opposed to the conventional approach through the midline sternotomy, and rerouting it to the left side of the heart with closure of the large hole in the heart.
