Speedy action: Pune police rescue kidnapped 2-year-old within 24 hours

In a case of a swift rescue operation, the Pune police united a two-year-old child with his parents who had been picked up from outside his house, in an overnight operation that ended on Sunday morning.

The victim, identified as Pushkaraj Somnath Dhanawade, was kidnapped from outside his house in Kondhwa on Saturday evening.

According to a senior police official, who was a part of the investigation, the police located the accused in Undri

The Pune police through a swift operation rescued a 2-year-old child from a kidnapping bid after an overnight operation that ended on Sunday morning in Pune. Identified as Pushkaraj Somnath Dhanawade, the child was taken from the premise of his house in Kondhwa area of Pune.

A piece of material evidence on the property of the child’s father was found by the police, which led them to identify the phone number of the accused man, according to a senior police officer who was a part of the investigation. 

The area of the phone number was traced near Undri in Pune. However, by the time the location was traced dusk had fallen, according to the police official. Through a phone call to the father of the child, the kidnapper had asked for Rs 10 lakh ransom from Somnath Dhanawade who is an interior designer. 

Various officials from the crime branch including  Shirish Sardeshpande, deputy commissioner of police, crime, Sameer Shaikh, assistant commissioner of police, Crime-1, and senior officials of various units of crime branch were present. Along  with crime branch officials, a team of 40 crime branch policemen and local policemen were deployed for the search operation.

“Five teams were tracking outgoing routes on five highways. There were two teams heading towards Nashik to mislead him (the suspect),” said the officer.

The location of the phone was traced to Wadachi Wadi in Undri. “The locals helped us a lot in the search. We started around dusk and he started running as soon as he realised that we were closing in. He ran in the field for a while before throwing the child and fleeing the spot,” said a senior official.

The police are on a lookout for the man who is believed to have planned the kidnapping well in advance. A case in the matter was registered at Kondhwa police station. 

In another case in February, 21-year-old Varad Shailesh Chine, a resident of Roya Housing Society was kidnapped and taken by men who demanded Rs 20 lakh ransom. The 21-year-old was found after the men's phones were traced.  

Also in February, two people were arrested for kidnapping a child for begging. The two were identified as Lala Shivaji Suryavanshi (38), a resident of Indira vsahat in Aundh and a native of Nandgaon in Usmanabad, and Sunita Lakshman Binavat (30), also a resident of Aundh and native of Karnataka. The child, Avinash Adey (3.5), a resident of Shalimar society in Kondhwa was playing when the two picked him up.

In yet another case in November 2018, a 12-year-old girl was kidnapped and bound to a chair in a house in Nere area of Hinjewadi. The two men, who were later arrested by Pimpri Chinchwad police, had demanded Rs 50 lakh in exchange for safe return of Maahi Jain, 12. The police traced them after the two placed the ransom call to Maahi’s father.
