Responding to the ensuing protests by engineering students at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) over ‘faulty’ evaluation, the varsity officials claimed on Thursday to have done their bit by declaring the ‘revised’ results on November 1. However, the students stand to disagree to the re-evaluated results, calling it an unjust cover-up.
“Based upon the vice-chancellor’s orders, we had made the effort to re-evaluate the said papers and declare the new results based on the revised model paper. This was in compliance to the demands of the students for re-evaluation following discrepancies in the model paper. But, our part has now been done, the other claims of faulty checking, grace marks and delay in declaration of results do not have any ground,” said Ashok Chavan, controller of examinations, SPPU.
Contrary to this, the students have stated that the new results are merely a verification of the prior marks without any re-checking . “We had asked the university to re-evaluate and re-check the papers as the problem was with wrong checking and not wrong totaling. A total of 16 marks were to be given to the students for the subject Strength of Material (SOM), which has still not been done. The results that are now up on the website are merely a re-totaling of the previous marks and have no changes in them. A bulk of engineering students still continue to be at risk of losing a year,” said Saurabh Garg, a civil engineering student, MIT.
To follow up the issue, the students are now planning to meet the vice-chancellor once again on November 3 to request him to provide the said assurances in writing. “It has been easy for them to go back on their word as most of the assurances were verbal and based on our trust on them. But now, it is about to break and therefore we want a written confirmation that our lives will not be spoilt by the mistakes of examination evaluators. If nothing concrete comes out of tomorrow’s meeting, we will be forced to stage a larger protest,” Garg added.
