Two murders, one of a man with a history of crimes and another, of a security guard of an automobile showroom, were reported in the city on Sunday. While the murder of the security guard was reported from Gujarwadi road in Katraj, the record criminal was murdered in Gondhalenagar in Hadapsar.
Sujit Verma, a 26-year-old man with a history of crimes, was riding a Royal Enfield Bullet when three men hacked him to death. The three attackers came on a bike, said senior police inspector (PI) Vishnu Pawar of Hadapsar police station.
"We suspect that the attack happened out of an old rivalry between the three attackers and the deceased man. We are in the process of identifying them. They came on one bike and attacked Verma in a small lane in Gondhalenagar," senior PI Pawar said.
Verma had four cases registered against him in Hadapsar police station earlier. Charges against him include cases under Sections 323, 324 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and rioting.
The police are also looking into Verma's criminal history in Ahmednagar as he is originally from the region. Verma, who currently does not have an address, used to live with Vicky Galte, who also has a criminal history, until five months ago. Galte was earlier booked under Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous of Activities (MPDA) by city police.
Verma, who was granted bail in all four cases against him at Hadapsar, had a falling-out with Galte. A case under Section 302 of IPC was registered against unidentified assailants at Hadapsar police station. Assistant police inspector (API) Kiran Dhonde of Hadapsar police station is investigating the case.
In the murder case in Katraj, the beat marshal on duty informed the police that a body of a man with his head smashed in was found near Chate School along Gujarwadi road in Katraj on Sunday afternoon. The deceased man was identified as Arif Pathan, 45, who worked as a security guard at an automobile showroom nearby.
According to preliminary information, Pathan was killed during the late hours of Saturday and the body was dumped on the spot. A case under Section 302 (murder) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of IPC was registered at Bharti Vidyapeeth police station. API PR Madne of Bharti Vidyapeeth police station is investigating the case.
