Police registered a case against 17 residents who blocked traffic while staging a protest against the civic body over non-functioning sewerage system.

The police had allegedly cane charged these residents, who were protesting near Fish market in Sherpur on Thursday.

Assistant sub-inspector at Focal Point police station Tarsem Singh said the case was registered against Narinder, Santosh and 15 unidentified persons for creating inconvenience to commuters by blocking the traffic.

The case was registered under section 283 (danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation) of the IPC.

The protesters claimed that they were earlier staging protest in a peaceful manner, but as the area councillor was not listening to them even after repeated complaints, the problem of choked sewerage was not being addressed.

"When we held a marked protest, the police cane charged us," one of the protesters claimed. The police, however, denied the allegations of cane charging.
