The three-day 17th Punjab Science Congress with 'science & technology for sustainable growth' as theme commenced here at the Punjab Technical University (PTU) campus wherein researchers, faculty and subject experts associated with science and technology from different educational institutions participated.
Rajneesh Arora, vice-chancellor, PTU, emphasised on the importance of language in science education and how it is playing an important role in other countries. "China is one of the greatest examples where science is taught in the native language and this is precisely why their students excel in the subject. We, too, need to make the course syllabus available and teach science and technology in regional languages," he said.
Goverdhan Mehta, national research professor, University of Hyderabad, harped upon the fact that science and technology is touching our lives in several ways. "Mobile revolution is one of the recent examples. In 2014, mobile phone users will exceed the world population of 7.3 billion. However, the need at present is to use science and technology for sustainable growth, environment conservation and in our routine lives," he added.
On the occasion, the Punjab Academy of Sciences awarded honorary fellowships to Kishan Lal, former director, National Physical Laboratory; KK Bhasin, professor, department of chemistry, Punjab University; and Rajneesh Arora, vice-chancellor, PTU, for their contribution in their respective domains.

{{/usCountry}}The first session of the day was chaired by Ajaib Singh Brar, vice-chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar; Magsaysay award winner Rajinder Singh; Yogendra Yadav, director, National Renewable Energy Institute; and SS Chahal, vice-chancellor, Desh Bhagat University.
Eminent academicians, senior researchers, faculty, young scholars, students from Punjab and other states participated in the congress.
Also a science expo with 100 stalls was the centre of attraction for all the visitors where science models os school and college students were at display along with those from young scientists. The Pushpa Gujral Science City stall showcased possibilities of science in future.
