246 people died in one and half years on railway tracks in Patiala

In the past one and half years, 246 people have lost their lives on railway tracks in the district. People lost their lives in accidents after being crushed under trains on the rail tracks. Moreover, people also committed suicide on the tracks.

In the past one and half years, 246 people have lost their lives on railway tracks in the district. People lost their lives in accidents after being crushed under trains on the rail tracks. Moreover, people also committed suicide on the tracks.

As per the figures obtained from the Government Railway Police (GRP), Patiala, a total of 144 people lost their lives on the railway tracks in 2014 after being crushed by trains or committing suicide. Out of them, 105 people lost their lives after being crushed by trains. 23 people committed suicide on the railway tracks and 14 lost their lives on the tracks due to natural causes.

Meanwhile, the death toll on the tracks has risen this year as 102 deaths have been reported till August 24. 68 deaths have been reported due to accidents while crossing rail tracks. 23 deaths have been reported as suicides while 11 deaths were reported due to natural causes.

Sources said the main reason for the accidents is lack of boundary walls along railway tracks at certain sensitive points of the city. But apart from the city, most of the accidents took place in the villages from where the railway track passes.

On accidents, he said that in the most of the cases, people lost their lives due to their own fault. He said, "It is very necessary to look carefully while crossing the railway track but people always cross in a hurry and such accidents happen."

It has also come to light that people cross the rail tracks by putting their lives into risk despite a foot over-bridge (FOB) at the railway station.
