3 held for retired teacher’s murder in Gurdaspur

The local police on Friday arrested three men for the murder of Mohinder Singh, a 65-year-old retired teacher whose headless body was found dumped in a canal at Gazikot village on Thursday morning.

The accused were identified as Sewa Singh, his son Ranjit Singh, both residents of Jiwanwal village, and Gurpreet Singh of Babri village in the district. A case under sections 302 (murder), 364 (kidnapping or abducting with the intention of murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) and 404 (misappropriation of property possessed by the deceased at the time of his death) has been registered against the trio.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Toor said here on Friday that the police had also recovered a ‘dattar’ (sickle) and a Tempo used by the accused for committing the crime.

The SSP said the police, with the help of divers, had recovered the chopped-off head of the deceased from the canal on Friday.

Saroop said Mohinder had arrived at the judicial courts complex on his moped around 11am on Wednesday. Thereafter, he had gone missing.

The bereaved family, which had threatened not to cremate the body till the killers were arrested, finally performed the last rites at the cremation ground on the Gurdaspur-Batala road on Friday.
