As many as 34 of the 71 food samples the district health department had collected during the festival season have failed the quality test.
The district health department has received the results of tests conducted at the Chandigarh-based food testing laboratory.
The district health department will now summon the shopkeepers and food dealers whose products have failed the test. This year, the health department carried rigorous sampling drive to curb food adulteration.
Civil surgeon Dr RL Bassan said, “We have received results of food samples collected during raids. We will now issue show-cause notices to the persons concerned and initiate necessary action against them in accordance with the law.”
Of the 34 samples which failed the food quality test, 13 were found unsafe for human consumption, 17 of substandard quality and four samples were misbranded.
Those who will be issued show-cause notices will have to submit a reply to the health department within a month.
“If the shopkeepers fail to submit their reply within a month, action will be taken against them as per the Food Safety Act and cases will be registered against those whose samples have been found to be unsafe for human consumption,” Dr Bassan further said.
Most of the food samples that failed the test are dairy products. Earlier too, dairy items have come under the scanner of the health department for adulteration.
