34 protesting ETT teachers detained

As many as 34 teachers protesting under the banner of the Elementary Teachers Training (ETT) union were detained by the police while they were taking out a procession here on Monday in support of their demands.

As many as 34 teachers protesting under the banner of the Elementary Teachers Training (ETT) union were detained by the police while they were taking out a procession here on Monday in support of their demands.

The protesting teachers were taking out a march near Hanuman chowk here when the police picked them and took them to different police stations. DSP, city I, Gurjit Singh Romana, said that detained ETT teachers were released later. The detained protesters included 11 men and 23 women.

The ETT teachers are demanding that they should be brought under the ambit of the education department. For this, they are staging protests in all districts of the state. District president of the union Jasveer Singh said that they would intensify their agitation in the coming days.

ETT teachers also staged a protest here against the lathicharge on ETT teachers at Harike Pattan and Amritsar on Sunday.

"We have been demanding an overhaul of the system which the government promised during the previous assembly elections. But, since then the government has paid deaf ears to our demands. It is all the lip service which we have received till now," said Hardeep Sindhu, district president of the union. The protesters even burnt the effigies of the state government and shouted slogans against the state government.
