The accused - ASI Dharambir, head constable Sukhbir Singh and constables Hardish Singh and Dharminder Kumar - were posted at a police control room (PCR) van attached with the Nissing police station, about 30 km from here.

Station house officer (SHO), Nissing, Jagdish Singh said on Tuesday evening that the accused cops had been booked for murder and were yet to be arrested as the matter was being investigated.

Victim Vikram Singh, a farmer, was allegedly beaten up by the accused near Amupur village.

Victim's father Gurcharan Singh said that while working in the fields, he saw Vikram being beaten up by the cops.

"When I raised an alarm, other villagers also rushed on the spot. On seeing us, the cops fled from the spot and we found Vikram dead," alleged Gurcharan.

Agitated over the crime, a large number of villagers protested and demanded immediate arrest of the accused policemen.

Senior functionaries of the district police rushed to the spot and assured the aggrieved family and villagers of a fair investigation.

Villagers staged a massive protest and gheraoed the Nissing police station. They also blocked Karnal-Nisisng road for more than an hour.

Gurcharan alleged that the policemen were trying to extort money from his son and when he refused to pay them, the cops killed him.
