Earlier, the district administration had decided to celebrate the International Women’s Day with a week-long celebrations to acknowledge the contribution of women to society.

Addressing a gathering of around 500 girl students from across the district on the occasion, Ruhee Dugg, assistant commissioner, shared her personal experiences and demanded equal rights for women in society. “While I was pursuing a course in medical education, I decided to appear for civil services examination. However, most people dissuaded me. But, I was determined to crack this examination. I made up my mind for this when I was in Class-7. We should realise that we (as women) can achieve everything if we have strong willpower.”

Conveying a similar message, deputy commissioner Varinder Sharma said that the female literacy rate needed to be improved. Later, during the programme, several teachers and students were awarded for their exemplary contribution in their respective fields. The youngest achiever was Amandeep Kaur, 13, a resident of Khadaksingh Wala village of the district, who had won a bronze medal in discus throw in the 61st National Schools Athletics Championship-2016 held recently in Kerala.
