The Border Security Force (BSF) and the counter-intelligence wing of the Punjab Police seized 4kg heroin and 100gm opium from the India-Pakistan border here on Wednesday.
The heroin, which was packed in nine packets, was worth around Rs20 crore in the international market, said BSF officials.
Addressing a press conference at his office on the Ramtirth road, commandant of 17 Battalion of the BSF, RC Sharma, said, “The contraband was recovered during a joint search operation launched at about 12.35pm on a tip-off some smuggling activity. The packets were found lying near the border. One packet of opium (weighing approximately 100 gm) was buried in a near the border security fence.” However, no drug smuggler was detected in the area.
He said keeping in view the vulnerability of the border and heightened activities of smugglers and anti-national elements, inspector general (IG) of BSF Punjab frontier, Mukul Goel, has already issued guidelines to all the sectors under the Punjab frontier for strengthening the border domination to effectively check the activities of anti-national elements on the border with Pakistan.
