The alleged recovery of about 50-gm heroin from an undertrial lodged in modern jail, Faridkot, has put a question mark on the functioning of the Punjab Police, which had taken the undertrial for a hearing in an Amritsar court on Wednesday. The incident has also brought to fore the alleged failure of the police post set up outside the jail to ensure that no inmate carries anything objectionable thing inside the jail.
The jail authorities claimed to have recovered about 50-gm heroin worth about `30 lakh in the international market from the turban of the inmate, Surjeet Singh. The undertrial had allegedly refused to remove his turban, citing religious reasons.
"The heroin was recovered from the turban of the undertrial when he was being brought back to the jail in the evening by the Punjab Police security.
As touching of the turban is a serious issue with it being a religious symbol in Sikhism, I have written to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) regarding the matter. Besides, I have also written to the senior superintendent of police to take action against the police employees who were with the undertrial," said Kulwinder Singh Thiara, superintendent of modern jail, Faridkot.
Surjeet Singh (45), a resident of Taran Tarn district, has three cases registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act at Amritsar. "Earlier too, huge quantity of heroin was recovered from him," said the jail superintendent.
