Activists of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took out a protest march and submitted a memorandum to Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal through the deputy commissioner here on Monday against the alleged attack by “political goons” at the Republic Day function held by the party workers on Sunday.

The protesters alleged that the assailants also “tore-off the national flag” hoisted at the function and demanded their arrest.

The incident took place despite heavy deployment of police in the area on account of Republic Day, they said, adding “police let the attackers go”.

Following the complaint of Ashok Talwar, convener, AAP, Amritsar unit, the unidentified accused were booked under Section 2 of the Prevention of Insult to National Honour Act 1971, and Section 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Civil Lines police station.

However, eyewitness said despite the “cops did not try to prevent the attackers”.

In his complaint the AAP Amritsar convener alleged that the AAP members were assembled at the Company Gardens for unfurling the national flag on the Republic Day when the incident occurred.

Meanwhile, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Bikram Pal Singh Bhatti said: “Investigations into the case were on after registering a case. Efforts are afoot to identify the accused and ascertain the reason behind the attack. The accused will be arrested soon.”
