Following the concern shown by schoolteachers on aggression among youngsters (‘To read students’ minds, schools to query parents’, HT, February 22), the district administration on Wednesday decided to tackle the issue through a panel of experts.
The experts would design a presentation; in the initial phase, 90 teachers from government schools will be called and given tips on general psychology and how to detect attitude change in school students.
Amritsar deputy commissioner Rajat Aggarwal on Wednesday held a meeting with experts such as Dr BL Goel (director, Institute of Mental Health), Dr PD Garg (Guru Nanak Dev Hospital), Dharamveer Singh, principal of Harkrishan Public School and officials from the district education department.
The meeting was called to find out from experts how aggression or other problems faced by school students could be resolved.
After a recent firing in a school in which two students received splinter injuries, Hindustan Times had talked to teachers about the problem. Aggarwal stressed on a roadmap to deal with the issue, while the experts suggested ways in which teachers could be involved in the process.
Dr Goel said a questionnaire could be used to give tips to teachers so that they could talk to students who showed aggression or attitude change. Dr Garg said there was a need to educate parents and teachers on the issue. There are studies on the behaviour of children which can be implemented, he added.

{{/usCountry}}Talking to HT, Aggarwal said, “The issue is of great importance and the administration wants to start it as a pilot project. After a presentation by experts, teachers will be asked to talk to children who have attitude problems. There are 192 government schools in the district and we will cover all in three phases. The first will be executed on March 7.”
Dharamveer Singh said the model adopted by experts could also be offered to private schools.
It was also stressed that CDs of the presentation be distributed in schools.
