On the run since 1991 and proclaimed offender since 1997, Prabjot Singh of Saarchoor village in the Ghanie Ke Banger police jurisdiction near this town in Gurdaspur district was earlier arrested in 1988 after an encounter with the Dera Baba Nanak police at Shahpur Jajjan village on the border. Former BKI president Dharam Singh Khastiwal and Gurinder Singh Ghinda had then managed to escape but police had seized an AK-47 assault rifle and some live cartridges from Prabjot Singh.

In 1991, Prabjot Singh jumped bail and fled to the US. “In 1997, after he was declared proclaimed offender, police issued a lookout notice for him at various airports to catch him,” said Dera Baba Nanak station house officer (SHO) Gorakh Nath. It were the Dera Baba Nanak police again that arrested him on Thursday.
