Fuming over reports of demolition of a gurdwara in Sahiwal in Pakistan, Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh on Tuesday condemned the act. Taking serious note of the step being taken allegedly by land mafia to replace the gurdwara with a shopping plaza in the city which is 250 km from Lahore in Punjab province, he said, “A true Muslim cannot take such step, because all the religions of the world teach humanity and brotherhood and ask the people to shun hate”.
Advising Sikhs based in Pakistan to unite against this and take up the matter with the Pak government, head of the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs demanded that the authorities there should take action against the mafia with immediate effect, “so that nobody can dare to do so in future”.
“Instead, the Pak government should take measures to guard the worship places of the minorities in the country and rein in the elements that target gudwaras”, he added.
The jathedar said Sikhs daily pray for well-being of mankind. “Still, they are targeted. Recently, followers of Buddhism attempted to encroach upon a historical gurdwara Dangmar Sahib which was visited by Guru Nanak Dev ji, in Sikkim.” He said the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) are taking measures in this regard and have raised the issue with the Centre.
He also asked political parties to not indulge in a blame game at the martyrdom anniversary of sons of Guru Gobind Singh. Various parties hold rallies on the occasion at Fatehgarh Sahib every year in the last week of December. Akal Takht asked them to only pay tribute to the martyrs.
