Akal Takht, SGPC hope Khalsa's fast will end soon

Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Avtar Singh Makkar have expressed the hope that a solution would be found to end the hunger strike of Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa, who is seeking the release of six Sikh detainees from prisons in Punjab and other states.

"We are positive that a solution will be found in the next couple of days. We are in touch with the Punjab government, which in turn has established contact with the states where some of these detainees are lodged," Makkar said in an informal chat with the media here on Friday. Giani Gurbachan Singh expressed his views to a delegation of the Grewal faction of the Sikh Students Federation (SSF), which met him in his office.

Khalsa has been on a fast-onto-death at Gurdwara Amb Sahib, Mohali, since November 14.

"The release of all Sikhs detained during the period of turmoil has been the foremost demand of the 'quam'. Their release is an emotional issue for the community," the jathedar said in his interaction with Gurcharan Singh Grewal, head of the SSF faction.
